A Message from the Los Angeles Commision
on Assaults Against Women (LACAAW)
LACAAW, established in 1971, is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to the elimination of violence against women, youth and children. Serving approximately 40,000 people a year through the Metro/West LA office, the West San Gabriel office and the Mid-San Fernando Valley office; LACAAW also has impact statewide and nationally through model programming, policy, education and advocacy work. LACAAW's many ongoing community services include: a 24-hour Rape & Battering Hotline; a 24-hour Stalking Hotline; counseling and advocacy for survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and stalking; self-defense training; community education and organizing for violence prevention; consultation for film, television, radio and other media; Latina Services; Deaf & Disabled; and In Touch With Teens, a comprehensive youth relationship violence prevention program.

LACAAW is governed by an all volunteer Board of Directors with technical assistance provided by the LACAAW Volunteer Advisory Board. Programs are coordinated by a combination of staff members and volunteers, who provide over 20,000 hours of service each year to victims of all socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds, teens and children, some of those who are Deaf, homeless, elderly, physically or developmentally disabled and recent immigrants. All LACAAW services are also available in Spanish and American Sign Language.

LACAAW is part of an ever growing network of people and organizations holding to the philosophy that violence is preventable and that no one need face the crisis of interpersonal violence, or threats of violence, alone. A network of people guided by the principles of empowerment, education, advocacy and social change.
